13th Annual Wings Over Gillespie
Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of
the Commemorative Air Force!

Saturday June 16th and Sunday June 17th, 2007

Press release:  San Diego's Annual Wings Over Gillespie Air Show

On June 16 & 17, 2007 Air Group One, the San Diego wing of the Commemorative Air Force will present their annual Wings Over Gillespie Air Show at Gillespie Field in El Cajon. This year’s theme honors the 50th Anniversary of the CAF!

The Commemorative Air Force has the largest airworthy collection of former military aircraft in the world. It has over 150 flyable combat aircraft, making it the world’s seventh largest air force! The CAF’s members number over 10,000 worldwide, composing 80 wings in 30 states and 4 countries. The CAF’s purpose is to acquire, maintain and operate vintage military aircraft, ground vehicles and associated artifacts for the education and enjoyment of present and future generations.

The CAF is a living, flying history lesson, giving tribute to America’s great military aviation heritage. It proudly displays some examples of the only flying aircraft of its type, such as the B-29 Superfortress and Curtiss SB2C Helldiver. Scores of its aircraft have been used in movies for decades, including the recent version of Pearl Harbor.

Come be part of history at the Wings Over Gillespie Air Show on June 16 and 17. Each day will feature re-enactments of WWII and Vietnam War aerial battles complete with pyrotechnic displays, “bombing” runs and strafing attacks. Aerobatic pilot Craig Teft will perform in his Pitts Special, and John Collver will demonstrate his aerobatic skills in his SNJ “War Dog”. Watch as two AD Skyraiders, so important to besieged ground forces and downed pilots in Vietnam, dive from the sky. Witness the flight of such revered aircraft as the B-25 Mitchell, P-40 Warhawk, C-46 “China Doll”, F6F Hell Cat, C-53 Skytrooper (actual D-Day veteran aircraft), and the TBM Avenger (the torpedo bomber flown in WWII by former President George H. Bush). A rare treat will be the flights of  two early biplanes, the DH-4 and SE5A, flown by decorated WWII veterans. The L-29 "Thunder Delfins" jet team planes are flown by some highly decorated Vietnam War veterans, too!

Approximately 50 aircraft, both flying and in static displays, will be on hand that you can see up close. This unique air show will have live entertainment throughout the day, interviews with aces and veterans from WWII to present day, a large Kidz Zone, and free shaded seating for over 400 people. As always, more than two dozen food and merchandise vendors will be on hand.

Special News Alert: Added this year will be a Car Show, consisting of approximately 30 of San Diego County's most beautiful antique, classic and muscle cars!! Starts at 11:30 AM. Will parade slowly thru the air show spectator area for up-close viewing!

The air show runs Saturday, June 16 through Sunday, June 17. The gates are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission = $12.00 for adults (12+); kids 6-11 and military with I.D. = $6.00; under 6 = free.
